RADICAL LIVING By Abigail Wakefield
For the beginner, the one who may know nothing about Christianity, where do we start? For ourselves, sometimes we need a re- fresher. We need to get back to the basics - so let’s do that today.
The human race was created by God, a Supreme Being who is and always has been, with no beginning. He created the first man, Adam, and then pulled a rib from Adam’s side to fashion Eve. He put them together as hus- band and wife in the first cov- enant - marriage. He knew it wasn’t good for man to be alone. He gave them a beau- tiful garden in which to dwell - Eden. He gave them one
command - to not eat of the fruit of the Tree of Good and Evil. They transgressed His command. Eve by deception, and Adam by choice. This choice resulted in forfeiture of Eden because there was another tree - the Tree of Life. God wasn’t punishing them, He was removing them from the opportunity to eat of this tree in their fall- enness and become eter- nally doomed.
Enter Jesus - the “Lamb who was slain before the foundation of the world.” Jesus is the Son of God and the Redeemer of the human race. Jesus is also referred to as the “Last Adam” be- cause with His advent and His obedience to God the Father, He reversed the curse that had come to hu- manity. He became the pro- genitor of a new race - but I am leaping ahead of myself.
Jesus came to earth as a baby to a virgin named Mary, who was engaged to a car- penter named Joseph. He was raised as any other child would be, and we don’t hear much about him from the age of twelve to thirty, except that He grew in “wisdom and in stature.” At the age of thirty He began a ministry of three and a half years. He spoke to people about the goodness of Father God. He taught people that love is the highest way of all things. He healed people of impossible
sicknesses and He cast out demons. His goal was to show people that God IS love, and that God was inti- mately involved in their ev- eryday lives and deeply desirous of real relationship with individuals.
This message, along with the power that Jesus exhib- ited, was an affront to the re- ligious establishment. As men will often do, they wanted to retain power and glory for themselves as an upper echelon above the common man. Their collec- tive anger led Jesus to a cross where He was cru- cified. They thought that would “fix” their problem.
Instead, He rose from the grave, in a new and immortal body, and appeared to many people and spoke to them about the overcoming life. He granted His own authority to those who would choose to believe in Him, to do all the things He had done in His ministry. He ascended into the clouds before many onlookers, and He said that it was “expedient” for Him to go back to the Father in order that the Holy Spirit come to earth.
Holy Spirit came ten days later, in a blaze of tongues and glory and power. Holy Spirit is still here on earth, and when we choose to be- lieve in Jesus, we are granted fellowship from an internal perspective. He comes to live IN us, in our spirit. He is our power for liv- ing the overcoming life. We become “new creations in Christ” - a new race.
