RADICAL LIVING By Abigail Wakefield
A to Z, if you will, to show complete and utter destruc- tion and desolation.
As noted in the above verses, Jeremiah attributes the circumstances as the consequences of great na- tional rebellion of God’s people. In other words, God removed His hand of protec- tion after many years of cal- ling His people toward righteousness and allowed
them to experience life with- out His intervention.
The thought is terrifying to me, but at the same time, we have a new and better cov- enant that is based on our being “hidden in Christ” and Him having laid the founda- tion to “undo the works of the enemy.” When He said “It is finished” on the cross, He was guaranteeing a way into perfect internal freedom that enables us (if we avail our- selves) to “resist and with- stand” [v.14] every attempt of the enemy to bring us into
submission to him. He has given us an eternal way out, and that is Good News!
When I initially read the above verses, I saw a drug addict in my mind’s eye. Homeless, emaciated, largely disregarded, bound by less than stellar choices. It hurts my heart to see people who have been created in God’s image re- framing themselves into the image of servitude to a de- feated enemy, but this prob- lem is epidemic in our country and indeed, the world over.
Jeremiah wasn’t a par- taker of evil, but he was a witness whose eyes saw it all, and his heart was broken because he knew that it would take the severity of all the cumulative losses to make the people desperate enough to repent before God.
We are living in a dark world and we are called by God to be Lights. If we do not individually intercede both in prayer and in action, we can just as easily reap national consequences. Nationally we are at a critical juncture, and our commitment to Him is what can subvert the enemy and maintain our freedom. This is a call to arms.

“Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look and see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow which was dealt out to me, with which the Lord has afflicted me in the day of His fierce anger! From above He has sent fire into my bones, and it prevailed against them. He has spread a net for my feet; He has turned me back. He has made me hopelessly miser- able and faint all the day long. my neck. He has made my strength fail and [me to] stumble; the Lord has deliv- ered me into the hands of those I am unable to resist or withstand.” - [Lamentations 1:12-14, Amp].
Lamentations is generally attributed to Jeremiah, who is also historically called the “weeping” prophet. It is a col- lection of five songs bewail- ing the conquest of Jerusalem and Judah. The first four of the five chapters are written as acrostic po- etry, meaning that each of the twenty-two Hebrew al- phabet letters begins lines and sections in succession -
