RADICAL LIVING By Abigail Wakefield
In reading Mark 11 this morning I am struck by a couple of things that I want to share with you. This is the passage where Jesus and His disciples were coming into Jerusalem for the Pass- over feast, prior to His cru- cifixion. They are there to make preparations for the meal together, which in- cludes going into town and requesting a tied donkey colt for His use. We call this the Triumphal Entry, but con- sider how it appeared to the Roman occupiers by con- trast. Their generals were paraded through the city in golden chariots whenever spoils of war and prisoners were taken.
Jesus asked for a colt that had never been ridden. At that time there were many rabbinical teachings about how the Messiah would come, but most of Jewish thought was that He would come as a King to a worthy Israel, to rescue them from Roman persecution, thereby making all in their world right. That kind of Kingship would require that He come with great pomp, perhaps upon the back of a mighty stallion. Up until this point, Jesus had shied away from the acclaim of the people, often telling them to “tell no one,” but this was different.
The disciples found the colt that He told them of, and when they returned with it they spread their cloaks over its back for Jesus to sit on, and the passage tells us that the common people cut and spread palm leaves on the ground for the colt to walk on, while they cried “Ho- sanna!” to our King. They recognized what the reli- gious establishment of the day refused to acknowledge, and in doing so they rolled out their version of the red carpet, and Jesus came rid- ing on an humble beast of burden. He was showing them that His entrance into hearts and minds and lives would come in quite a differ-
ent manner, without outward ostentatiousness, and with humility of heart. Indeed, we cannot receive Him if our hearts are veiled with pride, and He comes to build an eternal Kingdom in us. He sets us free internally, and we create freedom externally as we grow in the knowledge of the fullness of Him.
This is also the passage where He upends the mon- eychangers in the temple. At that time Hebrew men were to bring a temple tax yearly that was roughly equivalent to two days wages. These
exchanges into temple coin were made on site, but the problem was location. The vendors set up tables in the outer court. The outer court was the only area des- ignated for gentiles to come
and worship. The provision for the gentiles was being upended as a market, and they were effectively being pushed out of their worship space. Jesus said “My Father’s house is supposed to be a house of prayer [for all nations], but you have made it a den of thieves.” The gentiles were being robbed of a place to worship. Jesus was angry because people like you and me were being excluded. His Gospel is inclusive of every tongue, tribe, and nation.
