RADICAL LIVING
By Abigail Wakefield Psalm 57:8-9 [Amplified] - “Awake, my glory ( my inner self): awake, harp and lyre! I will awake right early [I will awaken the dawn]! I will praise and give thanks to You, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to
You among the nations.” The setting of Psalm 57 is one in which David has es- caped from Gath and yet he is hiding in a cave. He is still in danger and reaching out to God with heart and words, to claim the promises he knows are his, even in the
face of dire circumstances. Charles Spurgeon says this of David’s commitment to God’s care of him: “With lip and with heart will I as- cribe honor to thee. Satan shall not stop me, nor Saul,
nor the Philistines. I will make Abdullam ring with music, and all the caverns thereof echo with joyous song.”
David was destined to be a man of war, and yet he knew a secret. He knew that praise and a grateful heart, one that
trusted in God to rescue, was the greatest weapon against the enemy that any man can have. David chose, in life threatening circum- stances, to worship. His wor- ship was focused and direct. In the verses prior he asks for mercy and grace, and ac- knowledges that wherever he finds himself, God alone is his shelter. He declares God to be the One who “works on my behalf and re- wards me, and saves me and brings judgement” on those who pursue with intent to harm or kill.
David was practicing what we all need to learn and practice today. When our souls are intruded upon in any fashion we tend to worry and fret, and our minds (left unattended) will gravitate to the worst scenarios. That is the natural human response to living in a fallen world. Our greatest warfare is in our worship. When we open our mouths and declare praise as a response to God’s goodness, we are reinforcing our internal awareness of Who we know God to be on our behalf. We are putting the enemy within and without on notice that we have not forgotten that there is a King of Glory who wars on our be- half. The battle is His, and He alone is our place of ref- uge. He will do for us what He did for David. He will res- cue, preserve, and protect
our lives. He will prosper us. We have the benefit of the back story of David’s life and the fruition of God’s prom- ises. We know all the details,

and so we think David to be a man set apart unto God, and out of the reach of our own human frailties. What truly set David apart was his personal intimacy with God. His trust in and reliance upon Him to supply all of his inter- nal and external needs. So when David was challenged by circumstances, his reac- tion was worship. Worship realigns our hearts and minds and calls us back into the position that He has al- ready established for us as His sons and daughters.
