Our Father says that we must deal with unforgive- ness quickly “in order that a root of bitterness not spring up.” Bitterness is a heart weed that chokes life out of the finest person. It is perva- sive, and it overtakes the garden of the heart and kills the flowers that would bloom. It seeps into conversation and steals joy, damaging the best relationships, often to
the point of separation. When a person holds bit- terness, they are often un-

No person, no matter how good or faithful they are, can forever withstand the assault of the bitter person. Com- ments come with subtle innu- endo and always leave the hearer feeling attacked for no good reason. The reason is that there is no good rea- son, but that the heart of

We want to remember the offense, be- cause it serves to 'protect us.’ But unforgiveness is a prison that gives the devil the keys to our lives, and he seeks to kill, steal, and de- stroy. He will use our own choices to torment us, and it will spawn
until there is nothing left but darkness.
Christ asks us to forgive in order that He might heal us. He has the keys to the King- dom of Light, and once that light shines into our heart and the enemy is fully ex- posed, the devil loses power and we are restored. When forgiveness is released we relinquish our need to self protect, and God is then able to make all things new.
