RADICAL LIVING By Abigail Wakefield
In this season that we are moving into spiritually, our understanding of God must enlarge until we can say that we know Him intimately with- out any walls. We often hold back in conversation with Him as if we can hide a thought or action if we ac- tively refuse to address it. The good news is that He al- ready knows, and He doesn’t
love us any less. The bad news is that as long as we try to withhold from Him, we are holding up the timeframe on our own healing, our own freedom. It is almost laugh- able (if it weren’t so sad) that we think our reticence equates with the ability to de- fraud Him. The age old quandary of the created at- tempting to overtake the Cre- ator. It simply will never happen.
There are equal elements of fear and pride that lend themselves to this process. Just as a child congratulates himself for his stealth at the cookie jar, and then lies to protect his thievery out of fear of his mother’s anger, we react the same way when faced with our own decep- tions. God is truth, and in His presence there is nothing hidden that His light does not ferret out. In those moments, we come face to face with
our own unadulterated sin. We can look away, of course, but the fallout is hugely con- sequential. We will suffer lack of intimacy with the One who loves us beyond all measure.
He loves us because we are His. Not for our perform- ance or our potential, our success or our benefit to so- ciety. He loves us because He made us in His image, and as such, we are His sons and daughters.
I cannot love any of my children less because they make less than perfect choices. I cannot turn away and refuse to be their mother because they are disobe- dient. My love for them is un- conditional and eternal, simply because they are mine. I adore each of them with my whole heart.
That is how the Father in heaven sees each of us. His desire is always for open communication, because when we come to Him with open hearts He is able to help us. He is always willing, but unable to help if we re- fuse to be receptive. In those instances, we are generally left to the consequences of our disobedience to be the facilitator of our change, rather than His loving correc- tion. I have been the recip- ient of both, and I can tell you without question that it is much easier to “fall upon the Rock” rather than having the rock fall upon me. His kind- ness leads me to repen- tance. His faithfulness leads me to gratefulness. His love leads me into all comfort. Why would I want to hide from Him? Why would I want to turn my heart away from Him and choose shadows rather than life?
Why would you?
