Paul is speaking to the Philippian church when he says in chapter 2 verses 12- 13 to “work out your own sal- vation with fear and trembling, for it is God Him- self who works in you to give you the desire and the power to do what pleases Him.”
So many questions arise in these two verses. Are we working out our own salva- tion? Do we revere God and tremble in His presence? Is He working in us and giving
us the desire to obey? Do we feel empowered to act upon what we have learned of His word?
Or are we simply going through life unengaged and doing our own thing? I think many of us have been raised in such a religious com- munity that we take His pres- ence for granted. He is just a staple of our lives, a part of what we know and some- times do. In other words, we are so familiar with Him that we disregard his holiness and we forget that He is great. Church is reduced to a Sunday social event and our bibles remain in the truck
until next week. We pray for His blessings because who doesn’t want to have more to do more? And when we fall short, when we need healing or there is an accident or a loved one leaves this world too early, we tend to either blame Him or chalk it up to His sovereignty because, after all, “God is in control.”
